The White House is the official seat and place of performing the duties of the President of the United States. Its construction began in 1792 and was completed in 1800. The chief architect and supervisor of the works was James Hoban, who erected the building in the neoclassical style. The first president to reside in the White House was Thomas Jefferson, who moved in in 1801. He also hired Benjamin Hentry Latrobe - the architect who was responsible for adding the colonnades to the building. In the course of the war with Great Britain of 1812-1815, the White House was occupied by British troops and burned down in 1814. Its reconstruction began almost immediately and lasted until 1817 - the first tenant after the reconstruction was James Monroe, the same who announced the famous Monroe doctrine. At present, the White House is seen as almost one of the symbols of presidential power, and its main room is the Oval Office in which each US president performs his duties.
