The Leaning Tower of Pisa (own. Torre pendente di Pisa) is the campanile (bell tower) of a complex of sacred buildings in the Campo dei Miracoli square in the city of Pisa in northern Italy. The building was erected in the Romanesque style and is considered one of the most outstanding architectural masterpieces built in this style in Western Europe. The beginning of construction dates back to 1173, and the end - to 1372, and the process of erecting the building itself was divided into three phases, the last of which began in 1350. The campanile in Pisa was built of white marble and has a total of eight storeys. Currently, the tower is 54.98 meters high. Interestingly, the tower began to deviate from the vertical already in the 12th century, and the very long construction process probably resulted from the fact that during its construction efforts were made to reduce this deviation, which, however, did not work. A major renovation of the facility took place in 1991-2011.
