SMS Panther was a German gun boat from the beginning of the 20th century, World War I and the interwar period. The keel for this unit was laid in 1900, the launch took place in April 1901, and the entry into service in Kaiserliche Marine - in March 1902. The total length of the ship was 66.9 meters and a width of 9.7 meters. Full displacement reached about 1,200 tons, and maximum speed - to about 13-14 knots. The deck armament, at the time of launching, consisted mainly of 2 SK L / 40 105 mm guns and 6 37 mm guns.
The SMS Panther was one of six Iltis-class gunboats. Units of this type were designed and built primarily for service in the German colonies in Africa and in the Papua New Guinea region (Bismarck Archipelago). For this reason, they were characterized by a relatively low speed, but had a good range, estimated at 3,400 nautical miles, or approximately 6,300 kilometers. The gunboat SMS Panther was built at the Kaiserliche Werft shipyard in Gdañsk and from the very beginning of its service it operated in non-European seas. Undoubtedly, the greatest publicity of this inconspicuous unit brought the so-called The Second Moroccan Crisis of 1911, when it was directed to the port of Agadir, becoming a symbol of German imperialism in the British and French press. The vessel survived World War I and was finally scrapped in 1931.
