Tsugaru was a Japanese mine-builder, known as a mine-cruiser, from the interwar period and World War II. The keel for the ship was laid in 1939, the launch took place in June 1940, and the entry into service in the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1941. The length of the ship was 113.6 m, width 15.6 m, and the full displacement - about 4,350 tons. The maximum speed is approximately 20 knots. The ship was armed with four 127 mm guns, four 13 mm machine guns, 500 sea mines and a single depth charge launcher. The aviation equipment consisted of a single Kawanishi E7K seaplane.

Tsugaru was created as part of the Japanese fleet expansion program of 1937 (the so-called Maru-3), which envisaged the creation of a new large mine-setter, which would be based on many design solutions of the Okinoshima unit. The new minelayer was externally very similar to its predecessor, but had different artillery weapons and slightly improved anti-aircraft defense capabilities. At the outbreak of the Pacific War in December 1941, Tsugaru supported the landing of Japanese troops in Guam, to support the landing and capture of Rabaul in January 1942. In May 1942, Tsugaru was supposed to participate in the operation against Port Moresby, but the operation was canceled in connection with the Battle of the Coral Sea. In August and September of the same year, he delivered supplies to the Japanese troops fighting on the Gudalcanal, and was severely damaged in the course of these actions. He returned to service in early 1943. In August of the same year, it was severely damaged again and had to be repaired first at Truk and later at a base in Yokosuka city. The mine-set Okinoshima was sunk on June 29, 1944 as a result of an attack by the USS Darter torpedo.
