One can risk a statement that with the conquest of the Kingdom of England by William the Conqueror as a result of the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and in connection with the huge reshuffles among landowners shortly after this battle, a knightly class began to form in England. Often it was of foreign (Norman) origin and supported the functioning of a strong central authority in the state, taking care of its own safety. This state of affairs began to change at the end of the 12th century, especially after the death of Henry II of the Plantagenet family, when the process of merging between the English elite before the Norman conquest and the upper classes of the Normans who had come from Normandy was coming to an end. In the full (10th-13th centuries) and late (14th-15th centuries) of the Middle Ages, the English knighthood was mainly involved in conflicts in Wales (which ended with full success), Scotland and France. One cannot ignore the participation of Richard the Lionheart, King of England in the years 1189-1199, in the Third Crusade to the Holy Land. The wars with Scotland were fought with varying luck and did not lead to the conquest of the country in the Middle Ages. The changeability of the fate of these wars can be proved, for example, by the English defeat at Stirling in 1297, which was avenged shortly later (1298) at Falkirk. On the other hand, conflicts and disputes with France lasted from the 12th century to lead to the massive participation of the English knights in the 100 Years' War (1337-1453). It is worth adding that in the 13th century, the main protective equipment of the English knight was chain mail, to which elements of plate armor were added over time. It was only in the last period of the 100 Years' War and during the War of Two Roses (1455-1485) that the English knight used full plate armor. In the 12th and 13th centuries, he most often wore the so-called a great helmet, which from the thirteenth century began to be replaced by a bascinet, which was a specific variant of the earlier head. When it comes to offensive weapons - of course, the sword and (from the middle ages) also the copy reigned. Various types of blunt weapons were also used, such as the stuffing box (in the late Middle Ages).
